NEW CITY COUPLE PLEAD GUILTY TO KILLING GRANDFATHER, BOTH TO BE SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced today that Constantinos Doonan, a/k/a “Dino” 32, of New City, New York pled guilty to Murder in the Second Degree (class A Felony), in the killing of his grandfather, Constantinos Mastakouris; and Jo-Ann Haughey 26, of New City, New York pled guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree (class B Violent Felony). Both defendants pled guilty before the Honorable Anne B. Bianchi on September 16, 2024, in connection with the 2023 killing of Constantinos Mastakouris.

In the County of Rockland, between January 29 - 30, 2023, acting individually and in concert with each other, the defendants brutally caused the death of Constantinos Mastakouirs. Mr. Mastakouris was strangled and choked to death, after he was killed, the defendant’s wrapped his body in a tablecloth and other materials and then placed the body in crawl space in the basement of the home they were residing in located in New City, New York. After they placed the body in the crawl space, the defendants stole Mr. Mastakouris belongings, including but not limited to his car, jewelry, and credit card.

District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II said, “The defendants in this case both pled guilty, taking responsibility for their horrific actions. My office is committed to combating elder abuse and protecting senior citizens from individuals who prey on them. The defendants engaged in a senseless act of extreme violence that resulted in the death of an innocent person who was defendant Doonan’s grandfather. I commend the thorough and professional investigation by the Clarkstown Police Department and prosecution by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Dominic Crispino and Supervising Assistant District Attorney Sharleen Bailon. Both defendants will be sentenced to lengthy state prison terms for their crimes.” The case was investigated by the Clarkstown Police Department.

Doonan and Haughey were remanded to Rockland County Jail and will be sentenced on December 3, 2024. Doonan will be sentenced to twenty years to life in state prison on the second-degree murder conviction. Haughey will be sentenced to fifteen years in state prison on the manslaughter in the first degree.

Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Dominic Crispino and Supervising Assistant District Attorney Sharleen Bailon prosecuted the case.
